About Our Chapter
Our Families
We currently have a growing number of active volunteer Host Families serving in Des Moines supported by a team of volunteers who offer hope and help to families and pregnant women by providing mentoring, babysitting, transportation, connection to resources (employment & housing) and tangible items such as diapers, maternity clothes, and baby items.
Our Churches
The Greater Des Moines area churches play a significant role in recruiting and supporting volunteers to come alongside parents or pregnant women who are in a crisis situation. Churches of all sizes and many denominations are active partners with Safe Families for Children of Des Moines.
Our volunteers come from various church backgrounds, but are all followers of Jesus with a desire to be His hands and feet to struggling families in their communities.
Our Team
All of our Host Families, Family Coaches and Family Friends are volunteers, but they are supported by our professional staff. Our staff passionately invests their lives in engaging churches, building and training volunteer teams in churches, supervising Family Coaches, informing and educating community providers about our services, and most importantly, loving and supporting families in crisis (while caring for their children) and pregnant, homeless women.

She works tirelessly to provide resources and support that help strengthen family units and foster positive environments for children to thrive. Carla’s passion is to advocate for underprivileged children and families to ensure families have access to adequate resources and a solid support network in place…. allowing families not just to exist, but to break generational cycles, thrive and live a happy and fulfilling life.
Alfonso Perez- Strategic Engagement Director
Al Perez has over 30 years in pastoral ministry, chaplaincy, and community development. Al has networking relationships across several community silos. His relationships from the Iowa Governor’s Office down to County Family Advocacy Organizations have given him inroads into leadership that can bridge the work of Safe Families For Children to our community. Al believes the mission of Safe Families is the sustainable model for community transformation. He is excited to see the brand of Safe Families For Children become the “Go To” Organization that Community Leaders trust and rely on to bring about system change.
